Description: Limited to fifty hand printed books and 300 compact disks Acrophony is a project created in 1991 by George Walker and Nicholas Stirling. The work explores symbols and sound as understood within the realms of the philosophy known as musica universalis. The music composition charts are composed using the symbols for the planets and other graphic indicators developed by Stirling and Walker. Acrophony is a work concerned with art and language. Each of the fifty books is hand printed on a Vandercook letterpress onto handmade paper from the St. Armand Mill in Montreal with original wood cuts, lino cuts, wood engravings by George A. Walker. The box contains a compact disk with original music and a book. The unique non-adhesive binding is based on a structure invented by Heidi Kyle. The CD is nestled in a vacuumed formed port (hand painted) made from the symbols used in the text and notations that were cast on a linotype machine. The book is signed and numbered. The music was recorded at the Strange Nursery Studios in Toronto. The musicians are Michelle Walker (vocals), Kevin Kelly (prepared guitar), Nicholas Stirling (piano, strings, percussion, bass, leaves clarecorder), George A. Walker (trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion, leaves, vocals). The work is included in Keith Smith's revised and expanded edition of Structure of the Visual Book Book 95 (1992) pg 33.
